GENERAL NEWS.

......His Lordship Right Rev. Dr. Gallagher will lay the foundation stone of a new church at Tarago next Sunday morning (7 Dec 1902), and is timed to arrive at Lake Bathurstat 10.30, where the people of that district will meet him.

OPENING OF A NEW CHURCH AT TARAGO.
His Lordship Right Rev. Dr. Gallagher, accompanied by Father Benedict, C.P., and Father Leonard, of the Cathedral, went to Tarago on Saturday morning for the purpeose of blessing a new church and administering confirmation. The examination of the candidates was conducted on Saturday, and the knowledge displayed was creditable. On Sunday morning Masses were said at 8, 9.30, and 11. The congregations at each were large. Before the 11 o'clock Mass the Bishop at the entrance of the church explained to the people, who had assembled to the number of about 400, the meaning of the ceremony of the blessing which he was about to perform. He then blessed the church on the outside, as well as the altar and interior of the church. A choir of Goulburn musicians supplied the music, which was of a very high order, and was a great treat to the people of Tarago, for which they are extremely grateful. Father Benedict preached a very eloquent and beautiful sermon
on the day's ceremony. The impression made will not soon fade. The Rev. Father Leonard, on whom with the Tarago people rested the responsibility of providing the funds, seemed bent on accomplishing his purpose. He announced that the amount expended on the church was over £500, of which £450 was in hand, leaving a debt of about £50. Owing to the generosity of the great congregation assembled on Sunday this was paid off, and it seems if it had been a great deal more it would have shared the same fate. The Bishop then proceeded to the ceremony of confirmation. There were 24 candidates. In a beautiful address he encouraged the candidates to the fulfilment of their duty, and to remembrance of the sacrament they were about to receive.

Luncheon, which was prepared by the ladies, was served on the grounds.

Mr. R. Graham read an address of welcome to the Bishop as follows :—" We, the residents of the parish of Tarago, accord you, his Lordship Bishop Gallagher, a hearty welcome, and are pleased you have returned to us again in health and strength; and we trust that you will be spared for many years yet to come to reign as Bishop over this diocese. Your memory has been cherished from when you were comparatively a youth preaching in the little church of Boro, and we extend to you a hearty welcome." Father Leonard said he was pleased to see how well things had turned out that day. He had been asked by the people of Goulburn if there was a church at Tarago and he could now look them in the face and say "yes;" and what a glorious thing it was to think that upon the opening of the little church it was free from debt through the liberality of those present. He desired to specially thank the people of Goulburn. who had so generously assisted in every way.

Bishop Gallagher then briefly addressed the congregation, and thanked them for the address of welcome. He said it gave him real pleasure to be present, as he could look back 34 years when he first preached at Boro. He was pleased to see such a nice little church in Tarago and doubly so to think it was free from debt. The achievement spoke volumes for the people in the parish of Tarago.

Three cheers were then given, and the people dispersed. Thus ended a memorable day in Tarago. The church is built of brick. The body of the church is 40ft. by 20ft. To this must be added the sanctuary, which is 15 x 12, making the total length 65ft. There is also a sacristy attached of about the same dimensions as the sanctuary. The entire church is completely finished-plastered, painted, and ornamented with statues, seats, and other appliances requisite for the fit celebration of the sacred mysteries. That it is free of debt is the work principally of course of the Tarago people; but the generosity of the Goulburn people has effected a great deal. Amongst the presents given to the church the statues, valued at ovor £5 each, are the gifts of Mrs. Dalglish and the Children of Mary, Mrs. F. P. Kelly and Mrs. O'Leary have subscribed sacred vessels and vestments of the same value.

The Catholics of the district owe a deep debt of gratitude to the members of other denominations, who by generous contributions and kindly sympathy throughout the work have done so much to bring about this splendid result.
