Wasserriese Ägier von Thale - a photo on Flickriver

Ägir oder Ægir (Hlér, anord. „Meer”) ist neben Wate in der germanischen bzw. nordischen Mythologie ein Name für den Riesen der See und des Bieres (Schilderung nach der Prosa-Edda).

Ägir wurde von Thor aufgetragen, für die Götter Bier zu brauen, aber er gab vor, keinen Kessel zu haben, der dafür groß genug sei. In Wirklichkeit wollte er sich aber nur keinen Befehl von Thor geben lassen. Thor allerdings besorgte sich einen riesigen Kessel vom Reifriesen Hymir. So musste der gedemütigte Ägir doch noch das Bier für Asgard, den Wohnsitz der Götter, brauen. Um sich für diese Niederlage zu rächen, vergällte er das Bier mit Hopfen, so dass es wohl noch trinkbar, aber nicht mehr geniessbar war. Bei einem Gelage der Asen lässt er Gold in die Halle tragen, so dass diese hell erleuchtet wird wie von einem Feuer. Dieses Gold ist das Leuchten des windstillen Meeres.
