November 22, 1963

            On the day of JFK's assassination, I was a 10-year-old fifth-grader in Saint John.
Knowing nothing of what had happened, I walked home and up the front stairs
of our South End apartment. Mom opened the door and, with tears in her eyes,
said "Somebody shot President Kennedy!"-----the man was probably more
revered in Canada than in his own country, as mind-bogglingly difficult to 
comprehend as that may be now in this vastly more cynical era. At any rate, the
brutal public murder marked the beginning of the end of my childhood innocence;
it was, in a sense, the real start of that frenetic, helter-skelter decade of the sixties.
It left its mark on millions, myself included. To this day, I'm not fully convinced that
the 'official' history reflects reality precisely. There's still too much unexplained.
Somebody writes a book 'demolishing' the contrary position, then another book
appears, allegedly accomplishing the opposite. The assassination was, virtually
from the beginning and in spite of its glaringly public character, a textbook study
on how to create an undying historical controversy. It is so mired in murk that
the skeptics will not be appeased no matter what.
