Close to Home

            Sailing across the Minch at night, many a sailor is cheered by the two white flashes which beam out every 15 seconds from the Tiumpan Head Lighthouse. For our local fishermen and those returning to the island by ferry, it means 'Close to home'.  

Designed by the Stevenson Brothers in their classic and instantly recognisable design, the lighthouse was established in the year 1900, while Queen Victoria was still the reigning monarch.

Tiumpan Head is a popular area for spotting the many whales, dolphins and porpoises which are regularly seen round our island coastline.

Set at the head of the Point peninsula, it is the last stop on the road which winds through the district, leading you past the shoreline of the Braighe, Loch Braighe na h-Aoidhe (a popular place for bird watchers who travel from all over the country and further afield to spot some of the rare birds which are often found in the area), and the newly restored Uidh Chapel at Aignish, burial place of the Chiefs of Clan Macleod of Lewis.  

Fresh sea breezes, beautiful views, peace and quiet from the stresses of every day life and the chance of some whale and dolphin spotting. All these, and so much more are on our doorstep.
