            In my 40 years living in Gress, this is the first time I have seen so much of the Glenesk wreck exposed. Normally, you are lucky to see one or two of the ribs near the rusting boiler   The recent storms have exposed almost the whole outline of the old herring drifter.  As I stood and studied it, I thought of all the stories these timbers held; of the men who sailed in her, the engineer who fed that boiler, I could almost hear their ghosts laughing and joking the way seamen do when they are working a boat.  Now she is just a skeleton.  She would have proudly sailed out of the Clyde and up and down the west coast in her day, and now...now she is a long, long way from home, giving up her secrets in her own time.  But she still has life in her.  That boiler?  It's an ecosystem in its own right now, with mussels, winkles, barnacles, algaes growing over it, and if you peer into it as the tide recedes, you'll see baby crabs, little flounders and gurnards all existing in their own little nursery. 

The Glenesk is as much a part of the village of Gress where I live as the people who live and have lived in it.
