A shiny roof: culture! [20130922]

            Walking along the road along the southern edge of Uda Walawe National Park, there are some houses each set a little away from the road on a roomy plot. When I see something interesting, I enter the yard, see if I can find people, and ask if I can take pictures there. Suddenly an orange tractor passes me on he road, the driver giving me a shout and a wave. A little farther on, I walk to a house to ask if I can take some pictures, and see the orange tractor parked there. The driver approaches me, and when I ask for permission he introduces me to his sister, who (like all people I asked before) is fine with me taking some pictures.

A little while after I leave and retrace my steps to see some houses in the other direction from where our bus is parked, the orange tractor passes me again. Sure enough, when I approach another house a little farther along, I find the tractor parked in the yard - and the driver coming at me with a smile. Sure, I can take pictures here, too. "This is my garden" he says, waving around him. I try to explain in simple English: "I photograph buildings. Houses." He nods. "Walls... doors... windows...". Something lights up in his eyes. He looks sharply at me, and says: "Culture!". Yes, exactly!

It is so rare that people I meet when I am taking my pictures actually "get" what I'm doing, that today's selection is my photo of his newly-extended porch, with a plate of corrugated iron so new and shiny I thought at first it was transparent. It's not: it's just reflections.
