CCCXI (LCC) Ambushed! - a photo on Flickriver

Mark of Falworth, Captain Didrik Hansson and Acelerar the Areani knight have continued their journey into the dreaded Outlaw lands. Mark paused to gaze at the majestic view.
"One feels as if one was on the top of the world!"

Acelerar grimly glanced towards the cliff edge.
"And if you look straight down you can see the entrance to the underworld..."

Mark looked down to see the fantastically deep gorge.
"Really!?!? Now one of these days we shall certainly explore those depths!"

"I would not recommend it. Even the most fearless Outlaws never get anywhere near it."

"Well, fearless Outlaws are certainly more fearful then a brave Loreesi knight. But I suppose you're right. We should keep moving to reach our destination."

Didrik paused,
"And where might that be?"

"Well, it all depends if..."

Mark's answer was interrupted when a loud clear voice called out,
"Greetings, Mark of Falworth."

Our heroes, startled by the fact they were not alone, looked behind them to see a black-clad knight with the bold red dragon emblem of the Queen on his shield.

"You have the advantage of me good sir. And who might you be?" Mark boldly inquired.

"I am Mathieux Deschamps, Baron of Loreos!

Mark jumped back as if struck,
"I beg your pardon!?"

The baron tossed his fiery red hair.
"You heard me right! The Queen in her infinite knowledge and generosity has bestowed upon me the province of Loreos!"
Our heroes simultaneously exclaimed
"WHAAT!?!?!"
Mark shook his clenched fist at their adversary,
Why you fobbing fly-bitten foot-licker! The Prince Jarius Lorean is the sole ruler of Loreos!
Mathieux spread a cruel grin across his face.
Not anymore! He resides in the castle of the old king, at the Queen's pleasure."

Mark masted his emotions with difficulty.
"Mathieux Deschamps, I am only a simple knight, my friends and I seek only to leave this land in peace."

"That is completely impossible. You are far more dangerous then you would like me to believe!"

Mark was now quite confused by the conversation.
"I don't understand what you mean?"

"How now? The mighty Mark of Falworth lost for words? This is unusual..."
Mathieux did not wait for a reply but continued.
"Yes, my friend, I would not let you escape even if I were to gain all of Roawia by doing so!

You who have butchered the poor beleaguered Outlaws, slain mighty dragons and very nearly brought great Lenfald to it's knees singlehandedly!

Were you to escape, you would soon rally the scattered armies of Loreos and send us back to our own shores! And soon the other factions, seeing your example, would quickly begin their own uprisings! Besides all this I know as well as you do that the royal blood of king Alphundus courses through your veins, you have as much claim to the throne as any ruler! And you could take it if you but tried!

Mark was now thoroughly incensed, and with every muscle tense, replied

"I have never sought to usurp the authority of those placed above me. But someone raised among thieves and bandits would never stop to think of things like honor and honesty.
No, Mathieux, my goal in life is to serve faithfully those who have put their trust in me as a truly chivalrous knight, and I will live and die for the glory of my God and for the glory of Loreos!"

"Bah! You are a fool, Mark! You have chosen your disastrous fate!
Now Men!"

With that order, a score of the Queen's soldiers charged from
both ends of the path along the cliff where Mark and his companions were standing!
Didrik and Acelerar both engaged their opponents on either side of Mark.

Mark saw that Acelerar was doing well against his opponent, Didrik however, was more evenly matched.

"Come on Didrik!! Sock it to em!!"
"I'm trying sir!!"
Didrik yelled as he lunged with his sword.

Mark was so busy watching Didrik that he didn't see the soldiers above pushing a huge boulder off the edge right above him!

"Look out Mark!"
Acelerar yelled as he dove and knocked Mark out of the way!

Mark slammed into Didrik, who had just sent his first adversary off the cliff, then watched with horror as Acelerar plummeted screaming into the infinite darkness below!

Enraged by the loss of his friend, Mark leapt to his feet.
Another soldier charged towards him. with a sweeping blow he cut right through sword, shield, and armor and hurled the rogue from the cliff!

Before Mark knew where his first opponent went, he heard a rumble then a yell of pain!

Mark glanced back to see poor Didrik smacked from the cliff from another boulder!

But he didn't have time to turn around, for another two soldiers rushed towards him!
With a mighty swing he sent the first flying backwards into the second!
But then Mark heard yet another rumble...
And he looked up to see it only a few feet away, he barely had time to even close his eyes before he was rocketed from the ledge and careened into the ravine of total darkness!
