Malachite beetles // Zipfelkäfer (Clanoptilus geniculatus)

            (Malachiidae)

The males of Malachite beetles possess secreting organs (excitators) on various parts of the body such as antennae, forehead, legs or apex of elytra, which produce a secretion provided to the female. The female then palpates it with the mandibles and even chew on it. During this chewing act, the gustoreceptors of the female come into contact with the secreted flavour and makes the female ready for mating. In Clanoptilus these excitators are located at the apex of the elytra.
