SP Homage to Mapplethorpe - a photo on Flickriver

From the first time I saw it I loved the intensity of Robert Mapplethorpe's 1988 self-portrait ( www.cegur.com/Mapplethorpe/SelfPortrait.jpg ). Obviously it's about mortality but there seemed to be more to it than that; resignation, strength, fear, tranquility, wisdom, self-knowledge?

Before I could copy the image I had to make a facsimile of the cane which I did with a cheap hot-rod shift knob, some paint, stain and a piece of dowel. I then set up a camera and backdrop in the backyard and exaggerated the DOF drop off using f1.4 and a little fill-flash to lighten the shadows
