Picture a Day June 2, 2011 - 36-Star Flag at Half-Staff

The 36-Star Flag was only in use for two years, from July 4th, 1865 to July 4th, 1867, following the addition of Nevada to the Union. This tattered flag flies permanently at half-staff, next to the Treue der Union Monument in Comfort, Texas, built in 1866 to honor the men killed during the Nueces Massacre. It is the only monument south of the Mason-Dixon Line to honor Union soldiers, and also the only place in the United States where the flag flies permanently at half-staff, with the exception of Arlington Cemetery. It may also be the only place where the 36-star flag is officially flown as well.
