Last Ray of Day

            The last ray of sunset, beaming upwards towards the cloud-filled sky, paints a spectacle of color in the winter's evening. 

It was a very cold day today. I wanted to go for a walk outside, to exercise my leg (the one with the month-old new knee). When I saw that the wind gusts were up to the mid 20's mph, and the wind-chill factor was hovering around zero Fahrenheit, I decided that an indoor walk would have to do. 

I still took my camera with me. I wanted to get some of the new snowfall. I drove around a bit, and saw that, as the sunset was approaching, it might be a good one, for the clouds were just right. Not too many clouds, and not a lack of them. Enough for the sun to work it's magic with the long rays of sunset light. 

As I approached a vantage point, this rare optical wonder shone upwards from the setting sun. It's a crepuscular ray, but a uniquely shaped one. A single beam of sunlight, shining directly upwards from the setting sun. I've only seen it in person a couple of times. It persisted as the sun was setting and for several seconds after the sun was beneath the horizon. The colors of the clouds and the sky were magnificent. 

I'm glad I waited until near sunset to venture forth with camera in hand.
