LA PEINTURE PLATE : UN ART SYNTHETIQUE ET SYMBOLIQUE.
L'esthétique est, en partie, indépendante de la technique. Le Beau et l'Emotion sont autonomes par rapport aux techniques du dessin ou de la peinture. Les techniques complexes qui permettent, en peinture, d'imiter la nature ne garantissent aucunement le Beau.
L'art Byzantin, l'art Paléo-chrétien et l'art Roman d'Europe occidentale, ont de fortes capacités à émouvoir, les peuples comme les élites, alors que leurs techniques du dessin sont souvent primitives.
Ce sont des arts très synthétiques et symboliques, qui vont à l'essentiel, car ils éliminent du réel tout ce qui pour eux n'est pas significatif. La simplification du réel leur donne une grande force expressive. C'est aussi, dans un autre domaine, la puissance de la caricature.
Il n'y a pas de doute que l'art paléo-chrétien et l'art roman, à l'ouest de l'Europe, sont nés d'un effondrement de civilisation, d'un recul général des capacités techniques, consécutif à la disparition de l'Empire romain. L'Art Byzantin est aussi, en partie, né d'une décadence technique, temporaire, au moment du grand péril slave sur Constantinople.
Mais Byzance a conservé cet art intact pendant des siècles, et l'a transmis à toute l'Europe slave.
Cet art était encore vivant au 19è siècle en Russie. Et même à l'heure actuelle dans les pays Slaves, des pays de même culture orthodoxe.
Byzance et les Russes auraient pu agir comme les Européens de l'ouest, à partir du 13è siècle environ : chercher à peindre autrement. Chercher à retrouver la troisième dimension, que maîtrisaient les Grecs et les Romains, pour représenter le monde tel que les yeux de l'homme le perçoivent. Avec pour but d' imiter parfaitement la nature, résultat dont Vasari constatait, vers 1550, qu'il avait été atteint.
Les artistes orthodoxes, au contraire de ceux catholiques, ont fait le choix de conserver leur esthétique. Ce n'était pas une incapacité technique, Byzance a bien plus vite que l'Europe de l'Ouest retrouvé un niveau technique de civilisation relativement complexe, mais une décision culturelle. Un attachement volontaire à un mode d'expression artistique.
Cette esthétique de la peinture plate se retrouve chez un peintre moderne comme Rouault, dans le même domaine, celui religieux. Et là aussi bien sûr, c'est un choix et non la conséquence d'une régression technique de la société du temps du peintre. L'Esthétique de certains artistes de l'Art Moderne, de Manet à Matisse ou Picasso, est une esthétique synthétique, qui, par ses simplifications, dans le rendu de la perspective, dans le modelé des volumes et dans l'expression des sentiments des personnages, prétend mieux exprimer certains aspects fondamentaux du réel. Mieux dévoiler une réalité cachée, mieux mettre en évidence une beauté particulière, qui ne s'aperçoit que par les formes simples et allusives.
Ce n'est pas un hasard si l'art de certains peintres de la période moderne présente des parentés esthétiques avec l'art byzantin et l'art roman. A plusieurs siècles de distance ces artistes puisent à la source de la même inspiration technique. Bien sûr les thèmes sont différents.
THE FLAT PAINTING : A SYNTHETIC AND SYMBOLIC ART
The aesthetics is, in part, independent of technology. The Beau and the Emotion are autonomous in relation to the techniques of drawing or painting. The complex techniques which make it possible, in painting, to imitate the nature, do not at all guarantee the Beautiful.
Byzantine art, Palaeo-Christian art, and Western European Roman art, have strong capacity to affect peoples and elites, while their drawing techniques are often primitive. They do not allow them to get rid of the flatness of their supports: the wall, the book or the table. Artists of those times can only paint in two dimensions.
But they are very synthetic and symbolic arts, which go to the essential, because they eliminate from the real all that for them is not significant. The simplification of reality gives them great expressive force. It is also, in another area, the power of caricature.
There is no doubt that the paleo-Christian art and Roman art, to the west of Europe were born of a civilization collapse, a general decline in technical capacity, consecutive to the disappearance of the Roman Empire. The Byzantine art is also, in part, born of a technical, temporary decadence, at the time of the great Slavic peril on Constantinople.
But Byzantium kept this art intact for centuries, and transmitted it to all Slavic Europe.
This art was still alive in the 19th century in Russia. And even now in the Slav countries, countries of the same Orthodox culture.
Byzantium and the Russians could have acted like the Europeans of the west, from the 13th century onwards: to seek to paint otherwise. Seek to find the third dimension, mastered by the Greeks and Romans, to represent the world as the eyes of man perceive it. With the aim of imitating perfectly nature, a result of which Vasari found, around 1550, that it had been reached.
Orthodox artists, unlike those of the Catholic faith, chose to preserve their aesthetics. It was not a technical incapacity, Byzantium has much more quickly than the regained Western Europe a technical level of relatively complex civilization, but a cultural decision. A voluntary attachment to a mode of artistic expression.
This aesthetic of flat paint is found in a modern painter like Rouault, in the same field, the religious. And there too, of course, it is a choice and not the consequence of a technical regression of the society of the painter's time. The aesthetics of certain artists of the Modern Art, from Manet to Matisse or Picasso, is a synthetic aesthetic, which, through its simplifications, in the rendering of perspective, in the modeling of volumes and in the expression of feelings of Characters, pretends to express some fundamental aspects of reality. Better reveal a hidden reality, better highlight a particular beauty, which only is perceives by the simple and allusive forms.
It is no coincidence that the art of certain painters of the modern period presents aesthetic kinship with Byzantine art and Romanesque art. Several centuries apart these artists draw on the source of the same technical inspiration. Of course the themes are different.
