Forte Orange / Fort Orange - a photo on Flickriver

Ilha de Itamaracá - Forte Orange
Está localizado na entrada sul do canal de Santa Cruz, na ilha de Itamaracá.

Foi construído logo após a invasão da Ilha de Itamaracá pelos holandeses, em 1631, segundo projeto do engenheiro Pieter Van Bueren. Foi denominado Forte Orange em homenagem à Casa de Orange, dos príncipes que descendiam de Guilherme, o Taciturno.

No final do século XVII, já ocupado pelos portugueses, o Orange passou a ser chamado Fortaleza de Santa Cruz.

Construído inicialmente em taipa de pilão, em princípio do século XVIII, foi revestido em pedra e cal por engenheiros portugueses, conservando, porém, o traçado holandês original, com seus quatro baluartes. Nessa época, ganhou também o portão de entrada com brasão português.

O Forte, que continua sendo chamado de Orange, encontra-se aberto à visitação, constituindo-se na principal atração turística da Ilha de Itamaracá.

In the context of the second Dutch invasions in Brazil, it was originally a small island (now lost) in front of the tip of the Southeast Itamaracá Island, where the bar dominated the southern channel of Santa Cruz
