The Andrews Avenue bridge over downtown Fort Lauderdale's New River was not always the efficient, smooth-running machine it is today. In fact, it took four tries and more than eight decades to construct a bridge to accommodate the growing city.

The first bridge, built in late 1904 or early 1905, was used by mules, horses, wagons and the occasional car. But the fixed span was one-way, and traffic had a tendency to back up. So in 1917, the county built a new one at the cost of $24,000.

In 1949, with a $500,000 pricetag, the county constructed yet another bridge, and this four-lane span had the distinction of being the first in Florida with an arched shape and single drawbridge. It still couldn't handle the increase in traffic, however, so it was rebuilt in 1981 — $5 million was the price — and is the bridge that frustrates so many drivers today.

The bridge, which 36,000 vehicles cross daily, is now set to undergo a $6.3 million facelift, with new paint, lighting and pedestrian friendly features.

So who was Andrews? A baseball player, George Edward Andrews, who won fame in the late 1800s and died in West Palm Beach in 1934.
