Golden Sunrise on Zabriskie Point, Death Valley National Park (Explore: 17 April, 2024)

            The views from Zabriskie Point are otherworldly in the sense that one imagines what the eye sees here must not be on planet Earth. The shapes and colors and patterns look like something we've perhaps all seen on television in sci-fi shows about distant unknown planets.

The ridges and hills visible from Zabriskie Point are composed of sediments from Furnace Creek Lake, which dried up 5 million years ago—long before Death Valley came into existence. 

As I shot this photo, I had the sense that the colors and patterns could be depicted as abstracts, so that it would be unclear to the viewer what is being photographed. For some of the many photos I've taken here, I've cropped in to create that abstraction, and in others, like this one, I've left enough of the photo so you can see it is a landscape shot of interesting hills and ridges.
