Samuel-Novarro House, Lloyd Wright 1928

            Whenever an iconic architectural property comes on the market, I always try to make myself available to see it. Such was the case when the Mayan-inspired Art Deco house that architect Lloyd Wright designed for Louis Samuel, silent screen star Ramón Novarro’s personal secretary came back on the market recently (September 2016) available for purchase for $4,295, 000.  The house has been meticulously restored by its current owners; its interiors look strikingly different than the last time I saw it.

The house has a rich Hollywood history. Novarro dismissed Samuel after discovering he was embezzling money from him and moved into the house himself, hiring Cedric Gibbons, the artist who designed the Oscar statuette to design the interiors.  Ramón Novarro (1899 –1968), was a film, stage and television actor who became one of the top box office attractions of the 1920s.  Hollywood promoted him as one of its leading “Latin lovers” along with Antonio Moreno, John Gilbert, and Rudolph Valentino. He achieved his greatest success in Ben-Hur; revealing costumes caused a sensation and catapulted him into instant stardom.  The house has been occupied by a long list of celebrity owners including Leonard Bernstein, Jerome Robbins, Diane Keaton and Christina Ricci. 

The house was designated a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument (No. 130) in 1974.  Located at 2255 Verde Oak Drive in the Los Feliz Oaks neighborhood of Los Angeles, California.  Please do not use this image in any media without my permission. © All rights reserved.
