Mahurangi River - a photo on Flickriver

Mahurangi River

            The Mahurangi River in northern New Zealand flows through the town of Warkworth and into Mahurangi Harbour, which opens into the outer Hauraki Gulf. The photo shows the lower part of the river which is a tidal estuary.  In colonial New Zealand, the river was the main link between Warkworth and the rest of the colony. A portland cement works (ruins in the right centre) opened in 1884 beside the river just south-east of Warkworth and many scows and steamers used it to export the cement. The works closed in 1929 and the ruins remain on the banks of the river behind what has become a marina. The Limestone Quarry Lake on the right is a popular local swimming spot. On the left bank there is regenerating native forest last milled over 100 years ago. The mangroves along the river are expanding due to siltation from the much-reduced forest cover in the catchment. Poplars are not native to New Zealand. They have lost their leaves.  Our native trees are not deciduous. Farmers plant poplars as shelter belts and for erosion control because they are unpalatable to the introduced brush tail possums which eat the life out of our native forests.  I never thought I would get a drone.  An upcoming trip to the Yukon changed my mind and now I am trying to get some practice around my backyard.
