Beaver ponds

            Beavers are ecosystem engineers. They can alter a fast-running forest stream into a beaver pond and wetland meadow, providing a home and breeding place for a whole new range of wildlife species.  The insatiable drive of the beaver to instinctively build dams whenever and wherever they hear the sound of running water is continually changing the landscape. When beavers dam moving water they create a better environment for themselves while also improving life for all in its shared ecosystem. Beavers build dams across streams to create a pond where they can build a "beaver lodge" to live in. These ponds provide protection from predators like wolves, coyotes, or mountain lions. Beaver ponds increase water storage on the surface as ponds are created and increased in size. This water filters down into the water table and recharges groundwater.  Beaver introductions outside of their historical native range, however, have caused serious degradation of native forests in Patagonia's Tierra del Fuego. Closer to their native range, a warming climate has caused beavers to spread northwards into arctic tundra where they have not been present before. The disturbance of the tundra appears to be thawing permafrost and exacerbating the effects of climate change.
