            In 1760, the 'Society for the Registry of Shipping' was founded in Edward Lloyd’s Coffee House in Lombard Street, the de facto workplace of merchants and insurance underwriters requiring definitive information on the quality of ships.  By the 1880s, almost half of the world’s shipping was classified by Lloyd’s Register.  Incidentally, it's unrelated to 'Lloyd's of London', the insurance market, or 'Lloyd's List', the newspaper, other than in their place and circumstances of foundation.

Lloyd's Registry moved to this purpose-built building, designed by Thomas Edward Collcutt FRIBA, in 1900; as its name suggests, Lloyd's Avenue, on the left, was part of the same redevelopment of derelict East India Company warehouses.
The façades of the Grade II* Listed Italianate building feature several sculptures by George Frampton; this bronze figure to the left of the main Fenchurch Street entrance holds a steamship, whilst her partner on the right holds a sailing ship.  Knighted in 1908, Frampton's best-known work is probably his 1912 statue of Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens.

No 1 Lloyd's Avenue, in the background, is also Grade II Listed.
