Janet's Foss, Malhamdale, Yorkshire Dales National Park, UK

            After plunging through the 100m-deep gorge of Gordale Scar, Gordale Beck enters a wooded valley and drops a further 3½ m over a limestone outcrop as Janet's Foss.

As at Gordale Scar (which is only ~850 m upstream!), calcium carbonate has precipitated out of the lime-rich water as a coating of tufa. However, the beck was rather high today, following unseasonable sustained rain, so the yellowish tufa was mostly submerged, 'merely' intensifying the colour of the deep pool.

'Foss' (or 'Force') is the Yorkshire word for waterfall, from the Norse, er, 'foss'. Janet (or 'Jennet') was the mythical queen of the Faerie, reputed to have a home either behind the falling water or in a cave a little further into the wood.
Though secluded, and a prime spot to experience bluebells and wild garlic, the waterfall has always been part of the local community – sheep dipping in the plunge pool, prior to shearing, was an annual (midsummer?) event – so it's unsurprising that there was a link to the 'other world' here.
