I forget which floor we occupied, but this is part of a high rise hotel complex 14.6 km east of the Kremlin, comprising four huge blocks: Al'fa, Beta, Gamma-Delta/Gamma (one double-size block) and, here, Vega. Collectively it's the largest hotel in Europe (and the world's largest 1980–93), with 5,000 rooms.
As the name suggests, it lies at the edge of the forested Izmailovo Estate, the undeveloped core of the Romanov imperial family's lands; the Izmailovo Court of Tsar Alexis, a wooden palace on an artificial island, is ~750 m away.
This is a typical view of the Moscow skyline (though the telephoto lens severely compressed apparent distances): masses of anonymous multistorey apartment blocks to the horizon, with the Soviet 'wedding-cake' palaces of Stalin's 'Seven Sisters' emerging at intervals.
The nearest, at the left, is 8.2 km away on the near (northern) bank of the Moskva River, 1½ km from Red Square, which is just off the right of the image. It's the Kotelnicheskaya Embankment Building, designed by Dmitry Chechulin (Chief Architect of Moscow) and Andrei Rostkovsky and built 1947–52. At 176 m tall, with 32 storeys, it as the first of the Sisters to be finished, briefly making it the Soviet Union's tallest building, until completion of the Moscow State University (MGU) main building a year later; it remained the world's tallest residential building until 1964.
The other visible Sister is the aforementioned MGU main building, 16¾ km away (see what I mean about the telephoto effect?). At 240 m tall (182 m to the roof plus the 58 m spire), with 36 storeys, it's the largest of the Seven Sisters and the second to have been completed.
Accommodating ~30,000 students in the one 1.6 km ² building, with ~33 km of corridors and ~5,000 rooms, this was Europe's largest building from 1953 until 1990, using 40,000 tons of steel and 130,000 m³ of concrete; it remains the world's tallest educational building. The tower contains such central facilities as administration, museums and a swimming pool, alongside teaching facilities and student accommodation, whilst the four radiating wings house further classrooms, accommodation and support facilities. The five-pointed star on the spire weighs 12 tons and contains a small room and viewing platform.
The unlit band across the image highlights MGU's location ~800 m from the edge of the Sparrow Hills; that's the wooded slope down to the Moskva River.
Other landmarks are more difficult to distinguish. I can spot the dome and bell tower of Trinity Church 15.8 km away, again on the edge of the Sparrow Hills, to the right of (and overwhelmingly dwarfed by) MGU. There's a documentary reference to it existing in 1453, but that dilapidated building was demolished by Catherine the Great (not personally... I think) and the current church, by Alexander Vitberg, dates from 1811-1813.
In front and slightly to the left, a glimpse of the Luzhniki Stadium roof (14.7 km away) is apparent between the nearer buildings. 'The Meadows' opened in 1956 as the 'Grand Arena of the Central Lenin Stadium'. It was the main venue of the 1980 Olympic Games and, with a capacity of 81,000, remains the national (football) stadium, hosting the 2018 World Cup.
In front and to the right of the stadium, I can just see a cupola of the Atrium shopping centre, between the Garden Ring highway and Kursky railway station, 6.6 km away.
