River Lune at Salterwath Bridge, Low Borrowbridge, Lune Gorge near Tebay, Cumbria, UK

            This late Georgian bridge, now Grade II Listed, seems oddly substantial for such a minor country lane serving two small farms; beyond Low Carlingill Farm, ~1½ km south of here, Fairmile Road itself is considerably narrower than the bridge's 6m-wide roadway.

The reason may be that this structure was the 1824 rebuilding of a much older crossing; this was the route of Wicker Street, the Roman road from Manchester to Carlisle, which presumably remained a main road through the Lune Gap for centuries.  The well-preserved outline of a Roman fort is only 350 m to the north of the bridge, at the confluence of Borrow Beck and the River Lune.
I don't know the precise location of the Roman crossing point(s), but it seems likely the builders of the current bridge would have taken advantage of the same natural features as the Romans, so this could be the exact same spot.

It's certainly not a ford in winter conditions like this. Note that the mid-channel bar, vegetated on the left of the image, is underwater.

Following the 2016 extensions of the National Park boundaries, this photo was taken from within the Yorkshire Dales National Park with the background, the steep slope of Little Coum rising to Greyrigg Forest (494 m), in the Lake District National Park. The valley between, the 'Lune Gap', is scenic but formally outside the Parks, as it's the route of the M6 motorway and the West Coast main railway line.
