Flying eaves, Daci Temple, Jinjiang, Chengdu, Sichuan, China

            Now surrounded by skyscrapers, the 'Temple of Infinite Compassion and Mercy' was founded on this site in the 3rd Century CE, though the current complex dates from the Shunzhi era (1368–1661) and was refurbished in 1867 and 2003.

That unbroken history is unusual.  In 756, the visiting Emperor Xuanzong was impressed by the monks' efforts to feed the poor, and honoured the temple with an example of his calligraphy (presumably the temple's name). This plaque later saved the temple from demolition by the secularist Tang Emperor Wuzong in 841-6, making it the sole Buddhist temple in the area.

These 'flying eaves' are characteristic of Chinese Buddhist temple buildings – in my very limited experience, the curves seemed less extreme on secular buildings, such as palaces.

The guardian animals are qilin, dragonlike creatures characterised by cloven hooves and burning bodies. They're protectors of the pure, punishers of the wicked, and generally auspicious.
Incidentally, 'qilin' is 'kirin' in Japanese, and is the logo of a certain beer.
