Sedilia at St Fachanan's Cathedral, Kilfenora, Co. Clare, Ireland

            Though it has a population of ~460 (only 220 within the village itself), Kilfenora is said to be "one of the oldest urban settlements" in County Clare; St Fachanan founded a monastery here in the 6th Century, the current church dating from 1189–1200.

It's now a simple nave behind a tower at the west end; this, the chancel, is roofless and no longer used, whilst the transept on the northern side has a glass roof protecting three of Kilfenora's five (originally seven) famed high crosses. A cathedral since 1152, in practice it's served more at the parish level since 1606 when the diocese was merged into others. It's not currently the parish church (which is nearby), but is still used occasionally.

Self-evidently, fine 15th Century details remain in the chancel, including a doorway and this Gothic sedilia (seat recessed into the wall) depicting a pouting bishop.
