Coniston Fells, Lake District, seen from Baines Cragg, Forest of Bowland near Lancaster, UK

            On an extremely clear, snowy afternoon, a long lens can reveal very familiar peaks from very unfamiliar angles.

The Coniston Fells form one of the main radial ridges of the Lake District, extending from Wetherlam in the core of the National Park out to the Duddon Estuary and, arguably, Black Combe at the far south-western edge of the National Park. This particularly clear view, from ~45 km away in the Forest of Bowland AONB, is of the core of that ridge.

Starting from the right (for a change) Swirl How (802 m) is 47¼ km away on the edge of the image. Its ridge continues left to Coniston Old Man (803 m, 45 km away). Bowfell (902 m) peers over the col from 53¾ km away.

Left of the Old Man of Coniston, Dow Crag (778 m) is 45.7 km away on a side ridge descending past Brown Pike (682 m; 44.8 km) and White Pike (598 m; 44¾ km)

Grange-over-Sands is 21.2 km away ‘below’ White Pike, on the far side of Morecambe Bay.
