Thornton Force Waterfall, River Twiss above Ingleton, Yorkshire Dales National Park, North Yorkshire, UK

            Initially cut by a postglacial burst flood, when a moraine-dammed lake was suddenly released, Thornton Force has steadily cut back ~60 m upstream since the end of the Ice Age but has retained its shape.  One can easily see the layer of resistant Great Scar Limestone over less-resistant shale/slate; the latter has been eroded until enough of the former overhangs that it collapses. At present, the overhang is just enough for visitors to carefully clamber behind the 14 m cascade, remaining dry.

Under normal conditions, anyway.  This is the highest flow I've seen here, by a long way. I recall being impressed by an event 14 years earlier, but this flow is at least triple that level.

Incidentally, Thornton Force is on the Ingleton Waterfalls Trail, which charges for admission, but sometimes the conditions are best outside business hours, or one simply wants to see this single waterfall without doing the whole 8 km walk.  That's possible from Access Land (free!) overlooking the site, as here. Just don't use the private paths (which are the only aspect I consider it reasonable to charge for), and don't take excessive advantage.
