Fairhaven Bubbles, Fairhaven Lake, Lytham St. Annes, Fylde, Lancashire, UK

            For seventeen days between 12 and 29 July 2012, Fairhaven Lake featured a number of large welded-PVC bubbles, some partially submerged, others floating more freely above their concrete anchors.  Devised by Steve Messam for the County and Borough Councils, the installation celebrated the visit of The Open Championship to Lytham's golf course for the first time since 2001.
I think they looked great, especially catching the evening light reflecting off the water, though I'm afraid I struggled to capture the quality of the light and, frankly, Fairhaven doesn't offer the most photogenic of backgrounds.

The 1200×400m (and 1.2 m deep) lake and surrounding Fairhaven Lake Gardens, together covering 19.5 ha, were laid out in the 1890s.  It was bought for the Lytham St. Annes Corporation by linoleum magnate Lord Ashton in 1926, retaining the name 'Ashton Marine Park' until the 1960s, a period which apparently saw huge audiences for motorboat events.  The recreational activities are a little more sedate nowadays, and the Lake is home to a large colony of Canada Geese.
