Water draining off the surrounding higher fells, via the deeply incised but seemingly unnamed stream at the rear right or via less-apparent groundwater flow, meets in the flat 'field' of Blakethwaite Bottom. It then leaves either northwards as Uldale Beck, at the rear left of the image, or westwards, supplemented by Great Ulgill Beck (entering at the nearer right of the image), as Carlingill Beck, which immediately falls 8 m over The Spout.
Both Uldale and Carlingill Becks feed into the River Lune, but by rather different routes from a near-identical or even intermingled source; that's another distinctive characteristic of the Howgills, which I mentioned in another caption.

I've seen one reference to 'The Spout of Carlingill' or 'Carlingill Spout', but I think that name is one person's invention; as long ago as the 1860s, a local gazetteer listed the accepted name as simply 'The Spout', without further qualification.

Carlin Gill is also the boundary of the Yorkshire Dales National Park; the sheep and I on this slope of Blake Ridge are, technically, inside the Park, but Uldale Head, to the left of The Spout, is outside.
