Field near Old North Bridge, off Monument St, Concord, Ma. USA

            Afternoon light on the autumn grass in this field beside the approach to the North Bridge caught my eye, and my ear, as it was provoking an insect chirping unfamiliar to a Brit.  In my limited experience of Massachusetts, Middlesex County didn't seem radically different to Europe, southern Norway in particular, but the sound of a different continent's fauna suddenly stood out.

The Georgian clapboard building in the background is the Old Manse, a National Historic Landmark (a designation seemingly equivalent to the UK's Grade I Listed; of ~85,000 locations on the US National Register of Historic Places, about 2,500 (~3%) are NHLs).  Built in ~1770 for the Rev. William Emerson, who witnessed the first battle of the War of Independence from his farm (this very field?) in April 1775, in the mid-19th Century the house was occupied by influential authors Ralph Waldo Emerson and, later, Nathaniel Hawthorne; the vegetable garden was laid-out for the Hawthornes by their friend Henry David Thoreau.  Unsurprisingly, it's now a museum.
