"The "Loža" cafe is one of the oldest catering facilities in Rab. Between the two world wars, there was a cafe, a restaurant and a boarding house here.
Rab, with about 2,000 tourists and cafes in the city harbor, where music could be heard in almost every place, gave off much more splendor and liveliness than today, when over 20,000 tourists stay on the island in summer. In addition to the orchestras that played in the Praha and Imperijal hotels, two to three violinists or guitarists each played in the Grand, Central and Riviera cafes. The Russian balalaika played in the city lodge until midnight. The musicians, Russian emigrants, dressed in white embroidered shirts, black pants and boots, attracted foreign tourists, especially English sailors who would get drunk on beer and barely walk, dragging themselves to their boats. The house where I was born is located opposite the city lodge.
I fell asleep listening to the sounds of the balalaika. At midnight, they ended the evening by imitating the noise made by a departing train. The last time the Russian balalaika was played was in the summer of 1939, just before the beginning of the Second World War."

"Među najstarije ugostiteljske objekte u Rabu ubraja se kavana "Loža". Između dva svjetska rata ovdje je bila kavana, restauracija i pansion. 
Rab s oko 2.000 turista i s kavanama u gradskoj luci, gdje se gotovo u svakoj čula muzika, odavao je daleko veći sjaj i živost nego danas, kada ljeti na otoku boravi i preko 20.000 turista. Pored orkestara koji su svirali u hotelima Praha i Imperijal, u kavanama Grand, Central i Rivijera svirala su po dva do tri violinista ili gitarista. U gradskoj loži do ponoći je svirala Ruska balalajka. Svirači, ruski emigranti, obučeni u bijele izvezene haljetke, crne hlače i čizme, privlačili su strane turiste, posebno engleske mornare koji bi se opijali pivom jedva hodajući, dovlačili se do svojih čamaca. Kuća u kojoj sam se rodio nalazi se nasuprot gradskoj loži. 
Uspavljivao sam se slušajući zvukove balalajke. U ponoć su završavali večer imitacijom buke koju stvara vlak u odlasku. Zadnji put ruska je balalajka zasvirala ljeti 1939. godine, neposredno pred početak Drugog svjetskog rata."
