Toronto Harbour, Broken Ice - a photo on Flickriver

What had happened here was that a tugboat had broken up the ice, then it had refrozen, so what appears as open water is in fact black ice that was about 4 inches thick. The large white ice sheets are about 1 foot thick.

This kind of shot always gets the "you must be crazy" or "you wouldn't catch me out there" comments, usually from people who don't know anything about ice safety. I would point out that the ice here is much thicker than it appears, and in any case you can't assess ice thickness from a photo, or even from shore.
