Nightscapes at Dee Wright (Explored July 4, 2022)

I have been wanting to shoot this location for a long time. And to tell you the truth, I am a bit frustrated with the image. It turned out ok, but I had much higher hopes.

I got there early, just to be sure I had time to scout the best locations and compositions. It was my first time there after all. The road that leads to Dee Wright is closed for most of the year, only open in the summer. I did not know that this was the first weekend that the road was open. That could be bad for me.

I had anticipated that there may be some crowds, so I went on a weekday to avoid them. Nope, fail. I got there when the sun was still up, only to find four other photographers waiting too. As the night set in, five more showed up. Normally this would not matter much, you usually capture a late blue hour image of the foreground and blend it with a latter Milky Way. However, in this case I had planned to add a ton of lights all over the observatory. That does not blend well with other photographers. I thought, hay, I could just talk with them all, see if that would be ok. After all, they could use the lights too, right?

Well, one of them specifically asked me not to use any lights at all. Grr. I did not want to be a jerk, so I said, I would use lights early in the night, pre Milky Way, and that way I could have the foreground in the bag early. And that's what you see here. Thing is, this was just a quick 1/2 hour of lighting the place up. I wanted to do so much more than this. I wanted to do my first Milky Way selfie, you know, cliche, holding the light orb. Nope. I wanted to light up the back of the building, to add a model glow to the rim of the structure. Nope. I wanted a slight light trail going up the pedestrian path. Nope.

Well, considering that, the image still worked, I don't mean to complain too much. I do want to go back some time, when I can be alone and take my time.

Camra geek stuff warning: This was a three image blend, one for the lights, one for the rocks and structure outside, and a Move-Shoot-Move tracked sky.
The MSM or Move Shoot Move is a great and simple star tracker for simple wide angle Milky Way work. I love it. It produces very clean images without the need to stack. I know some photographers star track and stack. I think that's nuts, the star tracked image alone is plenty clean for me.

There is one thing odd about using a star tracker. You could just shoot the sky once and use that image over and over in your sky. See, when using a star tracker you have to shoot one long frame of the sky and another for the foreground. However, I shoot a new sky every time, I want to be true to the site, and the night I was there.
