Ancient Ice - a photo on Flickriver

Ancient Ice

            This image is from Castner Ice Cave, a glacial ice cave near Fairbanks Alaska.  The image is technically taken in under a natural land bride just outside the cave.  The image was shot with my brother, that's actually me in the image.  It was a bit of a team effort.  We both scouted out the spot and took turns shooting it from the same tripod.   I enjoy shooting with my brother, and it does not happen often enough.  

When scouting info about this location you may read that it had a cave in in 2022.  True.  Please don't let that keep you away.  Yes, the big wide mouth of the previous cave was neat, but this version is no less interesting.  Additionally, none of the internet info will tell you that there is a cave and a land bridge.  They are right next to each other, clearly once part of the same structure, but not any more.    However, if you were looking for a wide mouth cave image, the land bridge will still give you that.  I won't speak to the danger, yes, it could still be dangerous, but it is certainly no less breathtaking when you go.  Just different.  

The cave actually took a victim that day, his lens banged against the ice and the manual/auto focus button popped off.  We could not find the actual button, which may make repair tough.  It had a long life though.  He was a good lens.  ;(
