Side-striped Pit Viper (1 of 1) - a photo on Flickriver

            We shot this venomous Side-striped Pit Viper from a safe distance.  I kept freaking out my guide, who was holding my flash with diffuser attached, showing him where I wanted him to hold it.  He would pull me back until I finally stopped doing it.  This was a captive snake, somewhat used to being handled with a snake stick, so was unlikely to strike.  But if it did, that could surely end in disaster, but usually is not fatal.  I've learned that it is an arboreal snake, living in dense foliage, often at the base of palm trees. Its beautiful green color looked great under flash, allowing for a dark background.  (Bothriechis lateralis)
