Lion Pride on Cape Buffalo - a photo on Flickriver

            My main motivation for going to Kenya is April was to witness and capture lions hunting Cape Buffalo.  April is off season.  The migration is in Tanzania, but the lions have their own territory and don’t follow the herd.  The Rongai Pride’s range included the Simon’s Bella Camp Mara, and lion roars could often be heard from the camp.  I was there for two weeks, and it appeared that the lions weren’t motivated enough by hunger to take on a buffalo.  They would approach, without strategy, and soon tire and watch from a distance.  I anticipated that each day they would be hungrier, and the chances of a hunt would improve.  I saw them catch a warthog and thought that possibly that would delay the buffalo hunt.  Simon assured me, however, that that was a small snack which would not do much to assuage their hunger.   He was right.   Unfortunately, over the next several days we saw a few unsuccessful hunts.  Lions can’t stand up to the herd and need to catch a buffalo off by itself.  Finally, as luck would have it, just leaving camp we came upon the beginning of a hunt about to take place.  Etiquette required that we notify the other guides, but it still gave us time to take prime position before anyone else arrived and capture some nice shots.  As you can see, without the wildebeest to mow the lawn, the grass was very high.  Nonetheless, I was over-the-top excited to experience such an emotional event up close and personal.
