To mark September’s East and Southeast Asian Heritage Month, we are showcasing this photograph from 1969 Hong Kong, showing a disc jockey seated in front of a turntable at Radio Hong Kong studios.

Hong Kong was a British colony from 1842 - when Hong Kong Island was ceded to Britain after the First Opium War - until 1997.

This photo shows the studio of Radio Hong Kong in 1969. The British Hong Kong government started public radio broadcasts in 1928, which became Radio Hong Kong in 1948 and finally Radio Television Hong Kong (RTHK) in 1976. RTHK is still the public broadcasting service of Hong Kong.

This photo was taken just after Radio Hong Kong moved into its brand new studios at Broadcast Drive. The original description reads: “Spinning the discs in Radio Hong Kong’s new 16 studio complex.” It’s part of a government series of photographs by photographer Adam Lynford promoting the radio and TV industry in Hong Kong.
