Stained glass window by J & M Ballantyne, Edinburgh

            Acquired by the Black Watch Museum in 2004

This striking stained glass window, dating from the late nineteenth century, is based on an iconic painting of 1894 by the Scottish artist Robert Gibb, also in the collection of the Black Watch Museum. Entitled Comrades, the 42nd Highlanders, it depicts a scene from the Crimean War; a wounded soldier is tended by a comrade of the Black Watch while a Seaforth Highlander stands guard. The Black Watch suffered heavy losses from severe weather and disease during the Crimean winter.
