Saturday Self Challenge: brug

Een drieluik van drie in het oog springende bruggen over de Hoofdvaart in de Haarlemmermeer. De bruggen zijn ontworpen door (de firma van de) architect en ingenieur Santiago Calatrava. Na een prijsvraag werden de bruggen (van links naar rechts) Citer, Luit en Harp gedoopt.

De drie bruggen bezitten een architectonische schoonheid die kenmerkend is voor het werk van Calatrava. Hij is bekend van o.a. de Turning Torso in Malmö, Milwaukee Art Museum, het station Luik-Guillemins en de Snarenbrug in Jeruzalem. Ook is Calatrava bekend vanwege begrotingsoverschrijdingen, langere constructietijd en hogere onderhoudskosten. Dit is ook het geval bij deze bruggen.

Van de vele foto’s die ik van deze bruggen heb gemaakt, heb ik er drie uitgekozen voor dit drieluik. Alle drie de foto’s zijn genomen met een groothoeklens. De aanwezigheid van verkeer heb ik tot een minimum beperkt. Bewerking is in zwart-wit om de vormen beter tot uiting te laten komen. Dit was ook praktischer vanwege de verschillen in licht dat varieerde van wazige zonneschijn tot zware en donkere bewolking.

Saturday Self Challenge: bridge

A triptych of three eye-catching bridges over the Hoofdvaart (Main Canal) in the Haarlemmermeer (Harlem Lake, actually Harlem Lake Polder). The bridges were designed by (the firm of) architect and engineer Santiago Calatrava. Following a competition, the bridges were christened (from left to right) Citer (Zither), Luit (Lute) and Harp.

The three bridges possess an architectural beauty, characteristic of Calatrava's work. He is known for such works as the Turning Torso in Malmö, Milwaukee Art Museum, Liège-Guillemins station and the Chords Bridge in Jerusalem. Calatrava is also known for budget overruns, longer construction time and higher maintenance costs. This is also the case with these bridges.

Of the many photos I have taken of these bridges, I have chosen three for this triptych. All three photos were taken with a wide-angle lens. I kept the presence of traffic to a minimum. Editing is in black and white to make the shapes stand out better. This was also more practical because of the differences in light that varied from hazy sunshine to heavy and dark clouds.
