A Lone Tree Among the Barley - a photo on Flickriver

            Home from work for a few days and have luckily stumbled upon a spot of good weather once more! When weather like this coincides with my free time I would feel as though I were committing a crime to not go out with the camera. 

This evening (Sunday 15th July) I decided to take a 30 minute drive east into the Lincolnshire Wolds, these are a range of hills in the east of the county. They have been designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) since 1973, and the highest area of land in eastern England between Yorkshire and Kent. The highest point along the Wolds is the aptly named “Wolds Top” at a dizzying 163m above sea level.  As a feature they run roughly parallel with the North Sea coast, from the River Humber in the northwest to the town of Spilsby in the southeast. 

I took several images that pleased me on this evening but have so far only had time to process one or two. This one was one of my favourites! I was walking on a pathway along the ridge line (the horizon of this very image) when I spotted this lone tree at the bottom of the field in the broad valley. I made my way using “right to roam principles” to the location following tractor tracks as not to damage the crops. When arriving in the location I instantly knew the composition I wanted, looking past the tree up the field to the ridgeline, tractor tracks running diagonally bottom left to top right toward the tree (on the right hand third) and a frame that excluded anything that would detract the simplicity. Thankfully the sky was quite interesting too so I was more than happy to include plenty of this.

Technical wise with the camera tripod mounted I used a 0.9ND grad to hold back the sky, a 1/40 exposure to capture some slight movement in the crops, and an F14 aperture for front to back sharpness. During post processing I added some split toning to significantly warm the image and mainly alter the colour of the barley (The barley was in the in-between phase neither a lush green or straw yellow, not a colour I really liked). The warming pushed the barley toward the straw colour camp. Other small tweaks were made to contrast and a little sharpening.
