Blackwall DLR

            The DLR station at Blackwall opened, with the Beckton Branch, on 28 March 1994. DLR unit 27 arrives at Blackwall with a Eastbound service. The Docklands Light Railway (the DLR) opened in 1987 to serve the redeveloped Docklands area of London. The system is an light metro system and the trains are fully automated, controlled by computer, and have no driver; a Passenger Service Agent on-board each  train is responsible for patrolling the train, checking tickets, making announcements and controlling the doors. The initial system comprised two routes, from Tower Gateway and Stratford to Island Gardens. Most was elevated on disused railway viaducts or new concrete viaducts, with use of disused surface railway formation between Poplar and Stratford. The system was lightweight, with stations designed for trains of only a single articulated vehicle. The three branches totalled  8 miles (13 km), had 15 stations. The initial system had a relatively low capacity, but the Docklands area very quickly developed into a major financial centre and employment zone, increasing traffic. Stations and trains were extended to two-unit length, and the system was expanded into the heart of the City of London to Bank through a tunnel, opening in 1991. The east of Docklands needed better transport connections to encourage development, and a fourth branch was opened in 1994, from Poplar to Beckton via Canning Town transport interchange, along the north side of the Royal Docks complex. On 3 December 1999 the Lewisham extension opened followed by a further extension from King George V to Woolwich Arsenal opened on 10 January 2009. In addition to the three-car station extensions, part of which was funded from the 2012 Olympics budget, a line was opened from Canning Town to Stratford and Stratford International along the former North London Line of the national rail system, with additional stations. The DLR is currently 25 miles (40 km) long, with 45 stations. The DLR operate two types of rolling stock; B90/B92/B2K stock built between 1991 and 2002 and B07 built in 2008 and characterised by their black fronts.  Cited in Wikipedia.
