Zhengyang Men, together with the Jian Lou Arrow Tower, forms Qian Men (Front Gate) and lies on the southern edge of Tian'an Men Square. It was the most imposing of the nine gates of the inner-city walls that divided the imperial quarters in the Forbidden City from where during the Manchu Quin dynasty, the Chinese population lived. The other gates have given way to the modernization of Beijing. Zhengyang Men rises 131 feet (40m), stands on the north-south axis that runs through the Forbidden City and Tian'an Men Square. Both Zhengyang Men and Jian Lou Arrow Tower were heavily damaged by fire during the Boxer Rebellion and in 1916 the semicircular walls that connected the two towers of Qian Men were demolished to make way for the Qian Men Dajie road. Zhengyang Men currently houses a museum.
