My wife and I were riding along with our guides looking for game when over a dozen Sable Antelopes came out of the tall shrubbery unexpectedly. There were so many and so close that it was difficult picking a single target.
The Sable Antelope inhabits wooded savanna in East Africa south of Kenya. In Sable Antelope, the males are heavier and about one-fifth taller than the females. The head-and-body length is typically between 75 and 100 inches (190–255cm). Males reach about 46 to 55 inches (117–140cm) at the shoulder, while females are slightly shorter. Males typically weigh about 518 lbs. (235kg) and females about 490 lbs. (220kg). The tail is 16 to 30 inches (40–75cm) long, with a tuft at the end. The Sable Antelope has a compact and robust build, characterized by a thick neck and tough skin. It has a well-developed and often upright mane on its neck as well as a short mane on the throat. Their general coloration is rich chestnut to black. Females and juveniles are chestnut (as seen here) to dark brown, while males begin darkening and turn black after three years. However, in southern populations, females have a brown to black coats. Calves below two months are a light tan and show faint markings. The underparts, cheek, and chin are all white, creating a great contrast with the dark back and flanks. Long, white hairs are present below the eyes, and a wide, black stripe runs over the nose. Both sexes have ringed horns which arch backward. In females, these can reach 24 to 40 inches (61–102cm), while in males they are 32 to 65 inches (81–165cm) long. The average lifespan of the sable antelope is 16 years in the wild and 19 years in captivity.
