The Sagrestia Nuova or "New Sacristy" is one of two structures making up the Cappelle Medicee, or Medici Chapels at the Basilica of San Lorenzo, Florence, Italy. The chapels, dating from the 16th and 17th centuries, and built as extensions to Brunelleschi's 15th-century church were built with the purpose of celebrating the Medici family, Grand Dukes of Tuscany and patrons of San Lorenzo.
Michelangelo sculpted the tomb of the Duke of Nemours, brother to Pope Leo X and son of Lorenzo the Magnificent, and portrayed Giuliano as a military captain holding a staff of command. On the volutes of the sarcophagus lie the reclining statues of Day (right) and Night (left), which recall the inexorable passage of time. Day is portrayed as a powerfully-built man with an unfinished face. Night is a young, sleeping woman with a smooth, sleek body, drenched in lunar light.
When Michelangelo originally designed the New Sacristy, he initially envisioned a single funerary monument in the middle of the room, but later decided on wall tombs. The monuments to Lorenzo, Duke of Urbino and Giuliano, Duke of Nemours are flanked by the statues of Dusk and Dawn and Day and Night, whose mighty weight seems to split open the lids of the sepulchers, setting the souls of their occupants free to contemplate the Virgin and Child, symbol of eternal life.
With Michelangelo's definitive departure for Rome in 1534, the New Sacristy was left unfinished: The remains of Lorenzo the Magnificent and his brother Giuliano indeed rest in a simple chest-shaped sarcophagus over which Vasari placed the Madonna and Child sculpted by Michelangelo and the statues of Saint Cosmas and Saint Damian, patron saints of the Medici family.
