Lonely American White Pelican Wading the Shallow Waters at "Ding" Darling, Florida

We came to Sanibel, a barrier island off the Southwestern coast of Florida, mainly to inspect the damage still remaining from Hurricane Ian in September of 2022. I also wanted to visit Ding Darling, the National Wildlife Refuge on Sanibel, and see any remaining impact from Ian. The island and Ding Darling both seems to be well on their way to recovering, although the number of tourists, the life blood of any recovery, seemed depressed. The number of birds in the refuge appeared about normal for April, long after the migratory birds have left for their northern summer residences. This is one of about half-dozen American White Pelicans that had not yet left to spend the summer in central Canada and of a couple of hundreds who make their winter home at Ding Darling annually. Although I have uploaded many images of these majestic birds, I can't seem to visit "Ding" Darling without capturing several hundred more images and without keeping some of them. These are such magnificent, large and slow-flying birds that they make very tempting targets for photographers with very long lenses to capture them on the ground or at various stages of their flight.
The American White Pelicans are only winter visitors to central and southern Florida. Like many other birds and human visitors to South Florida, they come here to escape the harsh winters of their breeding grounds in the north central US and central Canada.
