            On our way back to Leh from Pangong Tso, we took a break at the rest stop in Chang La. It’s a place where tired tourists who’ve seen the lake meet the enthusiastic lot heading towards it. It’s also a place where the army provides free cups of chai to visitors. 

I saw an army officer settle down on a couch, and I took the seat across from him. I was curious to know what Ladakh was like in the winter.

“You see people here in the summer,” he said. “But it’s not like this in the winter. There is 8 feet of snow, temperatures go down to -30 to -40 Celsius, and there are no civilians. We can’t see ahead of us many times. We move forward on these roads with just a faith in God.”

“Where were you before Ladakh?”

“I was stationed in Himachal before this,” he said. “We spend our lives looking at mountains.”
