Wild Rice Rock Etching - a photo on Flickriver

            John and I took a drive out on the Arnhem Highway in the Northern Territory. Driving though floodplain and granite bushland, we pulled into a small lay-by beside the highway. Scrambling over bush and rock, we found the Mitsuaki Tanabe Granite Carvings, etched in the rocks, deep in the bush. A place that not too many people knew about or have seen. Camouflaged by their surrounds, these amazing rock etchings were an absolute gem to find, a real treasure and a rare prize after all the bush walking and clambering over huge rock it took to track down this site.
This is the wild rice seed head, a portion of the 82mt long rock etching of the Wild Rice that was part of the Mitsuaki Tanabe Granite Carvings, work created by world renowned Japanese sculptor Mitsuaki Tanabe, a specialising in huge sculptures. With the permission of traditional owners, Tanabe hand-carved, using a generator-powered grinder and diamond cutter, many depictions of green ants, witchetty grubs, flowers, words, and smaller wild rice grains into the boulders of Mount Bundy. Sometimes other sculptors helped him.
However, in 2014, aged 76, he died suddenly from a stroke, leaving his huge wild rice piece down the steep hill, unfinished. There was great sadness about the unfinished piece. In 2016, Tanabe's son, Taka Tanabe, arrived in Australia for the first time to see his father's Mount Bundy sculptures. With funding and support from the Australian Embassy in Tokyo, Taka Tanabe organised Jun Yamazoe, who had joined Mitsuaki Tanabe on his last Mount Bundy trip, to finish the huge Wild Rice Etching.
