GOES-U GMAG Installed on Spacecraft - a photo on Flickriver

            Engineers install the Goddard Magnetometer (GMAG) instrument on NOAA’s GOES-U spacecraft. 

GMAG measures the magnetic field in the outer portion of the magnetosphere to detect charged particles that can be dangerous to spacecraft and human spaceflight. These geomagnetic field measurements can provide warnings of sudden magnetic storms to satellite operators and power utilities. 

GMAG, aboard GOES-T and GOES-U, is an upgraded magnetometer instrument from the one that flies on GOES-R and GOES-U and provides improved magnetic field variation measurements. 

GOES-U, the final satellite in the GOES-R Series, is planned for launch in 2024.
