The Scutum Star Cloud - Featuring Messier 11 on 6x7 Film

            The first results are in!

I acquired the 600mm F/4 SMC Takumar in 2022, for the dedicated use as an astrographic optic.  I knew that the glass was old, and that conventional glass from the era was not up to modern standards.  This was not a problem, as my work flow considers these imperfections as part of the art.  

Mounting and guiding such a heavy lens required the formidable Losmandy G-11 equatorial mount.  It also required a new observatory to house it all.  This was completed last year, in preparation for what is happening now.  

Creating these images happens in the early A.M. hours.  While everyone is sleeping, I awaken.  The roof is rolled back, the subject being imaged is framed, and a guide star selected.  During exposure,  a watchful eye scouts for possible photobombs - those vermin of the skies - satellites.
