St Anne with the young Blessed Virgin and infant Christ (Continental, 16th Century)

It was time to complete Cambridgeshire. Over the previous three years or so I had visited 308 Cambridgeshire churches, but there were still seven more to go, all of them around St Neots. On a cold, bright late October day I set off with my friend John to visit them all.

Diddington is a wonderful church, despite its unpromising location next to the A1. After more than three hundred Cambridgeshire churches it was a delightful surprise to find one that will easily make its way into my Cambs Top 20. The Big House has gone, and only the church and the stable block remain.  Inside is one of the best collections in the county of 15th Century glass, and some 14th Century glass and 16th Century continental roundels too. There are medieval brasses including depictions of Saints and the Blessed Virgin and Child, and a delightful rough and ready atmosphere. The church is left open all the time, and a sign tells you so.
