reredos (Ninian Comper, c1910)

            St John, St John's Place, Aberdeen

Aberdeen's first Episcopal church, completed 1851 to house a congregation that was descended from from the remnants of the congregation of St Nicholas, who had left when their parish priest was expelled in 1693 for refusing to conform to presbyterianism. The church artist Ninian Comper was born in the rectory here, and his grand reredos remembers his parents. The church retains a late medieval font brought here from the ruined church at Kinkell near Inverurie.
